At FACTS, we know that in order to maintain and improve their reading skills, children must read routinely every week, including over the summer. Research shows that when students do not read with consistency during the summer months, their reading comprehension and fluency often slip. This is known as the Summer Slide.
With the goal of maintaining student reading levels, and instilling the routine of reading as part of daily life, EVERY FACTS STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO READ OVER THE SUMMER. Classroom teachers will provide specific details about summer reading assignments by grade. All assignments will be posted on PlusPortals as well. Students are required to keep a simplified reading log, and do 1-3 written assignments. Summer reading can be done with online reading resources, library books, or books from home.
In addition, over the summer, FACTS families will receive ixl.com membership information. We have purchased this useful online membership for students to use in the 2020-21 school year. Students may access the site for optional math and reading practice over the summer, as well.
